Padre Pio, Saint of Hope and Healing
"Pray, hope and don't worry.
Worry is useless.
God is merciful and will hear your prayer"
Who was Padre Pio?
Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, popularly known as Padre Pio is a saint of Hope and Healing. He was born on May 25th, 1887, in Pietrelcina, Italy. He was a humble Capuchin friar known for his deep love of Christ, devotion to prayer, and mystical experiences.
Padre Pio became famous for his deep spirituality, powerful intercessions, miraculous healings, and the stigmata, (the wounds of Christ), which appeared on his hands, feet, and side and lasted for 50 years. He embodied the idea that through Christ’s wounds, we are healed—both spiritually and physically. His life was a testimony to God’s presence in our lives, especially for those seeking solace in times of suffering.
Stigmata: In 1918, while praying before a crucifix, Padre Pio received the stigmata, which caused intense suffering but also attracted pilgrims seeking his prayers and counsel. He bore the mark of Christ crucified almost a half-century on his body.
Legacy: He founded the “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza” (House for the Relief of Suffering), a hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo, in 1956, which became a significant center for medical care and spiritual healing. Padre Pio died on September 23, 1968, and was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II on June 16, 2002.
Spiritual Life
From a young age, Padre Pio was deeply religious, feeling a strong call to the priesthood. He entered the Capuchin Friars at age 15 and was ordained a priest in 1910.
A Healer of Souls and Bodies
While many know Padre Pio for the miraculous physical healings attributed to him, his greatest gift was his ability to heal spiritually. Through the sacrament of confession, he reconciled countless souls to God. His penetrating insight into the human heart helped people uncover hidden sins and find healing and peace.
Confessions and Miracles
Padre Pio was a sought-after confessor. He spent long hours each day hearing confessions, offering spiritual guidance, and performing acts of penance. He is also credited with numerous miracles, including healings, bilocation (the ability to appear in two places at once), and levitation.
Padre Pio Relic
- A relic is a fragment of the body or physical possession of a canonized saint that can help us grow closer to God.
- Relics are divided into three classifications. A first class relic is a body part of a saint, such as bone, blood, or flesh. Second class relics are possessions that a saint owned, and third class relics are objects that have been touched to a first or second class relic or the saint has touched him or herself.
- This is considered a First Class relic as it is a piece of Padre Pio’s burial cloth – it was used to wrap his body after death, making it a part of their physical remains.
- This is St. Jarlath Parish’s first relic to be placed in our Church.
